It’s time for an introduction to the visionaries who breathed new life into my iconic building, The Newbury Boston. Originally established as the Ritz-Carlton in 1927, I’ve always been a beloved landmark and sought-after Boston destination. For more than 90 years, my open doors have welcomed celebrities, dignitaries, world leaders, and travelers hoping to explore Boston from the city’s best hotel. This new-found adventure of mine has been nearly a century in the making, and with my modern renovation and hotel design, the love affair I have with Boston will continue on.
Renowned designers Jeffrey Beers, Alexandra Champalimaud, and Ken Fulk, restored my iconic building into a well-crafted space that celebrates the spirit of my heritage. Together, this all-star cast has evoked a nostalgia that conjures another era from the front lobby, salon and guest suites, to my Northern Italian-inspired trattoria overlooking Boston. Now, in no particular order, let me formally introduce you to the visionaries behind my exquisite design.
A legend in the industry, Jeffrey Beers is known for his iconic glass creations and modern, emotional style that brings vibrant and sophisticated spaces to life. From his dedication to artistic architectural design, my confidant has set the standard in hospitality design on a global scale by leveraging his expertise around the world.
As a recipient of three Gold Key Awards, Interior Design’s “Best of Year'' Design award, and Hospitality Design’s Platinum Circle inductee, Beers brought his unique blend of artistry and architecture into my recreation. He focused on my unique heritage by incorporating many historic details—my original cobalt blue chandeliers remain inside my building at his request as a nod to my illustrious past. The Street Bar, a beloved watering hole for local residents, was reborn through Beers’ lavish design and skilled eye. A portal back to the 1920s, the bar evokes a speakeasy ambience with classic leather barstools and dark wood accents. The relaxed but energetic locale makes The Street Bar unlike any other place in the Back Bay.
Globally renowned designer and one of my dearest friends, Alexandra Champalimaud of the eponymous design firm, has been recognized for the way she’s been able to infuse spaces with modernity while maintaining character and a true sense of place. As an Interior Design Hall of Fame inductee and winner of Hospitality Design magazine’s Platinum Circle for Lifetime Achievement Award, her discerning taste is layered throughout my head-to-toe reimagination. Among her clients that include The Beverly Hills Hotel, The Pierre, The Plaza, The Carlyle, and The Little Nell, I’ve been put in excellent company.
Champalimaud crafted each of my guestrooms and 90 luxury suites, including 42 wood burning fireplaces and two grand Presidential Suites. My suites capture panoramic views of the Public Garden and serene, residential-style spaces that weave together soft hues, lightly stained oak and rich textures. The subtleties of Champalimaud’s scheme are among some of my greatest improvements. “We know how to modernize these great hotels using small changes that are very contemporary but not radical,” she said. “People want details like those of a crisply tailored shirt.”
With his creativity and inventive energy, Ken Fulk awakens the spirit of hotels and homes through their physical design. He imagines a narrative approach to interior design by bringing to life the stories that surround and define a place. The narrative that he tells through design has earned him recognition in Architectural Digest’s AD 100, Elle Decor’s A-List, and a nomination for a James Beard Award for Best Designed Restaurant. His designs stand on their own as some of my favorites like Sadelle’s—at the Bellagio in Las Vegas— and Parm.
Of course, adding to his impressive list is Contessa, my glass-enclosed rooftop restaurant. Step inside my garden in the sky and dial back the clock to a time when three-martini lunches and classic grand trattoria dinners were the only excuse you needed to dress up and discover a new delight. With hospitality powerhouses, Mario Carbone and Major Food Group, and their iconic Italian dishes, we’ve crafted a rooftop experience not to be missed.
